Healing Body Image Insecurities In Summer

It’s amazing how body image insecurities can seemingly come out of nowhere. A smell, a store, a perceived glance- sometimes it can send us into a spiral that was unexpected.
Warmer weather and all that comes with it (more exposed skin, pool parties, beach trips, etc), can have your body image insecurities screaming louder than ever!

With the weather warming up, body insecurities can also increase. Throughout my adolescence and into adulthood, I’ve had numerous emotional breakdowns in various dressing rooms as warm weather approached.
For entire summers, I refused to wear shorts out of such hatred for my legs, instead spending this time completely miserable.
​Over the weekend, as I put on my shorts to do some work in the yard (can you see all of the dirt on my legs?! haha), I took a long glance at my legs. The lumps, the curves, the bumps…. this area of my body that always brought so much shame. As feelings of discomfort arose, I continued to look & explore. Then I started to look at my legs from a place of love and gratitude. My feelings of discomfort started to dissipate as I thanked my entire body for never betraying me; for always having my back no matter how horribly I’ve treated it.

Now that I’ve learned to embrace my body as it is, I can also see how it serves me throughout every season of the year. I’ve found clothes that feel comfortable and cooling, and I enjoy the warm weather while it’s here, knowing it will soon leave again, making way for cooler weather. It’s all temporary & always evolving - the seasons of weather, and the seasons of body acceptance.
