What are you really reaching for when you’re reaching for food? Emotional eating is not inherently bad or shameful, but is instead a message from your body. It’s your body’s wisdom telling you what it’s in need of in that moment. By reaching for food to cope, we may be missing out on a great opportunity to ride a wave of emotion. The messaging I’ve been seeing & hearing lately seems to be along the lines of: You’re either sinking or swimming right now. Don’t let yourself sink so you’ve got to keep swimming.
But what if you allowed yourself to float for a while? What if you let go of the need to be in control, what if you allowed everything to wash over you- the anxiety, stress, overwhelm, fear- all of it? After floating for a while, check in with yourself and ask: What is the emotion beneath the action? And then ask: how can I give myself what this emotion is in need of right now? Perhaps you’re in need of love, comfort, peace, nature. How can you give yourself those things in this moment? Emotional eating can be a distraction from discovering how truly incredible you are- a discovery that can only be made by floating. What is your experience with trying to float? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic! |
